My work is devoted to Motion and the relationships of Colors. I am striving for a combination of balance, movement, unity, and expression of the beauty of color. As far as composition and movement go see the similarities with your own eyes by comparing to the other works in the site.
People often ask me of influences in art I have had, and I find it difficult to pick any one artist. I think Jackson Pollock, Kandinsky, van Gogh, and O'Keefe would be the most influential to my current work, but there are so many artists who have inspired me. I try to take a bit I have learned from each of them through their struggles with color, form, shape, and composition to make my work what I want it to be. I am not trying by any way to copy these artists, but obvious similarities arise. Art is about sharing ideas and learning from one another, and the aforementioned artists have shaped my views of art as I know it. As far as a style goes, "...labels are for bottles of wine..." a famous artist once said, I just call myself a painter. Some of the works are abstract, some much more symbolic. I have been jumping around quite a bit of late to see what direction I want to go in. Many of the works are influenced bit not only the mood I am in when I paint them, but the music I listen at the time as well. I often use lyrics from songs to create titles. Often the line chosen is a part of the song where the song was more influential.
Recently I have been incorporating more themes in my work; however they are not limited to them. Sometimes it is as easy as put in some music, and start painting the shapes, colors, and possibly images that come to mind at that moment. Many works are done in one sitting (called alla prima), as I find the energy or emotion that was original to the work at start is almost never there if I come back to it later. In most of the abstract or non-objective (no recognizable subject) works, I encourage you to envision how I painted and decipher a mood or feeling from the work. If you can get what I had, great! If not, just as good! I hope you enjoy them ---Michael
