Book Cover for Bryan Pratt, by Michael Freitag
This page shows 2 designs I made for a friend named Bryan Pratt. Bryan is afflicted with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, a form of muscular dystrophy. A few years ago he contracted pneumonia and almost died. Since then he has been on a respirator that breathes for him. I have known Bryan since high school. We were in several classes as well as National Honor Society together. By chance, I emailed him from a alumni website a few years ago. We have been talking on a regular basis ever since then. He asked me to design the cover to his autobiography Look Beyond This Cover, and to design a logo for his not for profit organization Disability Outreach (later I helped with some images on his webpage as well). Being honored he'd asked, I agreed...this is what we went with: Bryan is one of the strongest individuals I have ever met, and he is an inspiration to all. He has gone through more than many of us can conceive. Yet he continues to accept the hand dealt to him and try to help others. Look beyond his cover and you'll meet a intelligent man with a great sense of humor!

Bryan asks for no sympathy, only your help.
Help Bryan in his quest and support his organization Disability Outreach.

This is the Logo for Bryan's Organization,
Disability Outreach
It is the word DO, with five D's
forming the outter edge of a pentagon
and one O in the middle.

Here is the cover to Bryan's book I designed
In designing the cover, I conceived this sort of ghostly image, and made the cover compostion to echo the title of looking beyond the cover. The "ghost" image to literally look past the image, and then the words and picture(the shape and direction he was looking in) creating an arrow shape to the right to lead the reader's eyes to the edge of the book, and then inside. So there is really more symbolism involved than a normal book cover. This image was taken from a picture of Bryan when he was in high school. He is now revising his book as you read this. Yes, soon will come a newer, more recent cover for the hopeful second edition! Whether you read his book already or not, i can tell you that the second edition will be one of the most emotional and powerful books you weill ever read.
